Broilers or layers: where the money in Ghanaian poultry really sits

Broilers usually return cash faster, and layers usually give steadier income, but either can lose money if feed, disease or sales go wrong. For a buyer with limited capital, one box of 50 Ross 308 chicks at GH₵1,000 is the quickest way to learn the trade. Layers suit people who can wait around four to five months for eggs and plan to keep the flock for a year or more.

The short answer depends on your money and your patience

If you want one name, the honest answer is that layers usually earn the most over a full production life, while broilers give the fastest return on each box of chicks. Neither is a sure thing. The money comes from keeping costs low, keeping birds alive and selling into a market that wants what you produce. A venture that is managed well beats one that merely sits in a profitable sector.

When buyers ask which poultry pays best, we tend to ask three things first. How much cash can you put in without borrowing? How long can you wait before the first sale? Do you have a buyer lined up, or will you look for one after the birds are ready? Your answers decide the route far more than any headline figure. If you want a wider view of the sector, our note on the poultry business in Ghana covers the basics, and our piece on whether poultry farming is profitable goes further into the risks.

Broilers: quick cash, thin margins, little room for error

A Ross 308 broiler is ready for market in about five to six weeks in good conditions, so the money comes back quickly. A single batch can be sold, the house cleaned out and restocked within a couple of months, which is why many first-time keepers start here. Chicks for a Ross 308 run start at GH₵20 each, so a box of 50 costs GH₵1,000 before feed, water, housing and labour.

The trouble is the margin. Broiler sales are fast, but buyers can compare your price with the farm down the road, and a bad batch can wipe out a month of work in a week. Some mortality is normal in any flock, and a disease outbreak can be far worse. Because a broiler flock is in the house for such a short time, there is almost no room to correct a mistake before the birds go. Layers: a slow start and a longer, steadier income

Hy-Line Brown layers start at GH₵23 each, or GH₵1,150 for a box of 50. The chicks take roughly four to five months to reach point of lay, and during that time they eat feed and produce nothing you can sell. That waiting period is where many layer projects go wrong, because the money goes out long before any eggs come in. You need to fund the rearing, the housing and the feed for those months at the start.

Once the hens are laying, income is steadier and easier to forecast. A well-managed brown layer flock can lay for most of a year and a half, and the eggs sell every week. The risk shifts from the sudden loss of a whole flock to a slow decline in lay and shell quality if feed and housing slip. Layers reward patience and careful records more than any other kind of farming.

How much capital each route really needs

Capital is the question that sorts most people into the right route. A broiler run can start on a small budget, because the chicks are cheap relative to the return and the cycle is short. A layer project needs more cash in the bank before the first egg, and that cash has to cover feed for the rearing period, housing, drinkers, feeders and a vet budget. Underestimate that and the flock goes short of feed just when it needs it most.

A practical rule is to keep enough reserve to feed the flock through one full cycle without new income. For a broiler run, that means the feed for about six weeks. For layers, it means the rearing period plus a few weeks of margin. We do not offer finance or instalment plans, so the reserve has to come from your own savings. Mobile money and cash both work for chick payments, but the feed budget is a separate line and should be planned as one.

Feed is where the margin is won or lost

In most small poultry operations, feed is the largest single running cost, and the margin is decided there more than anywhere else. A broiler converts feed into meat at a certain rate, usually measured as feed conversion ratio, and a small change in that ratio over five weeks can move your profit noticeably. Damp feed, poor storage and wasteful feeders all push the ratio the wrong way. Good management is cheap compared with the feed you lose.

For layers, the feed bill runs for the whole production life, so the cost per egg is what matters. A hen that stays healthy and lays steadily spreads her feed over more eggs. A hen that is off lay for a few weeks costs you feed without giving you eggs. Use our poultry feed calculator to work out the weekly amount before you commit to either route.

Where most small farms lose money

Most small farms that fail do not fail because the market turned. They fail because a disease hit a poorly protected flock, because the chicks arrived late or weak, or because the source could not be traced. Newcastle disease, Gumboro and coccidiosis are the usual suspects in Ghanaian houses, and each can take a large share of a flock if it is not prevented.

Vaccination is the cheapest insurance you will buy. Our chicks leave the hatchery already vaccinated against Marek's, Newcastle, Gumboro, infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis. That protects the start, but it does not protect a dirty house or a damp floor. Build a simple biosecurity routine from the first day and keep visitors and footwear under control.

Timing the sale and why it matters

Price swings in Ghanaian poultry are real, and they tend to follow the calendar. Festive seasons and holidays often lift demand, while a glut from several farms selling at once can push prices down. Broilers are most exposed to this because the whole flock is ready at the same time. Layers spread their income across the year, which is one reason some keepers prefer them.

You can plan around this if you know your buyers. Speak to the people who will take your birds or eggs before you place the order, and work backwards from the date you want to sell. A broiler batch that finishes just before a busy period is worth more than the same birds two weeks later. Keep that in mind when you choose the hatch date.

Running the numbers before you commit

The table below puts the two routes side by side, using our starting prices and typical timings. The figures are general ranges, not results from our own birds, so change them to match your local feed and sale prices before you rely on them.

Which chick to start with, given your situation

If you have a small budget and little experience, and you want to learn the rhythm of the house, a broiler run is usually the sensible first step. You will learn feeding, water, temperature and selling in about two months rather than six. If you already have a market for eggs, steady demand in your area and the patience to wait, a layer flock can be the better long-term business. Many people end up running both, with broiler money carrying the layer house through the rearing months.

Whichever you choose, buy from a source that can tell you what the chicks were vaccinated against and that will make good any dead-on-arrival birds. Our broiler chicks for sale and layer chicks for sale pages set out what you get on each route.

    What nobody can promise you

No hatchery, bank or consultant can promise you a profit. A broiler batch can be lost to a bad week of weather or a sudden disease. A layer flock can drop its lay earlier than you expected. The chick price is the smallest number in the whole business, so do not decide on chick cost alone.

What a good supplier can do is send you healthy, vaccinated chicks on the day they hatch, make good any dead-on-arrival birds, and give you a batch record so your vet knows where to start. The rest is management, and management is where profit is made. Treat the figures on this page as the start of your own budget, not as a forecast.

A realistic first year, quarter by quarter

A sensible first year for a small keeper might run like this. In the first quarter, run one broiler batch to learn the house and the buyers. In the second, review the margin honestly and decide whether to add a layer house. In the third and fourth quarters, rear layer pullets if you go that way, and keep a broiler cycle going to cover the feed bill. Expect the first year to be a learning year rather than a profit year.

Keep a simple notebook for every batch, covering the hatch date, the chicks, the feed used, deaths, sale price and buyer. A year of those notes will tell you more about your own farm than any article can, including this one. The wider broiler and poultry business guides are good companions once the notebook is filling up.

    Questions farmers ask

Is broiler farming more profitable than layers in Ghana?

Not always. Broilers return cash faster, but the margin per bird is usually thinner and the whole flock is exposed at once. Layers take longer to pay back and need more capital, but they can earn steadily for about a year and a half. The better route is the one your capital and your buyers can carry.

How much money do I need to start a broiler run?

The chicks alone come to GH₵1,000 for a box of 50 Ross 308s at our starting price. Add housing, drinkers, feeders, feed for about six weeks and a vet budget before you call it a start. Confirm the exact price in writing with us before you pay.

How much do I need to start a layer flock in Ghana?

Hy-Line Brown chicks start at GH₵23 each, or GH₵1,150 for a box of 50. Budget for rearing feed for roughly four to five months before the first eggs, plus housing and equipment. Layers need the most cash before any income arrives.

Is poultry farming profitable for a beginner in Ghana?

It can be, with careful management and a clear buyer. Most beginners do better starting small with one broiler batch, keeping good records and expanding only after that. Disease, feed costs and weak sales are the usual reasons beginners lose money.

Which cost hits poultry farmers hardest?

Feed is usually the largest running cost on both routes. The chick cost is paid once, but the feed bill repeats every week. Keep feed dry, store it off the floor and measure what each bird actually eats.

Do you give loans or instalment plans for chicks?

No. We do not offer financing or instalment plans. Payment is by mobile money, bank transfer or cash, and the price is confirmed in writing for each order.

Can I run broilers and layers together?

Yes, many small keepers do, with broiler sales paying for the layer house during the rearing months. Keep the two flocks in separate houses and separate records so you can see which part of the farm earns.

How soon after ordering do the chicks arrive?

Chicks are dispatched the day they hatch, so the timing depends on your hatch date and the delivery route. Chicks can travel for around 48 hours on their yolk reserve. Delivery reaches all 16 regions, and the cost is quoted in writing before you pay.
