Why Obuasi buys broilers: a steady daily appetite

Obuasi is a gold mining town, and mining towns keep a daily rhythm that most farming towns do not. Shifts start and finish at different hours, and the people who work them eat out, buy from food sellers and take meals home. That creates a steady, all-week demand for affordable cooked chicken, rather than the sharp peaks of a festival month.

For a broiler farmer, that steadiness is the real opportunity. A flock that is ready on a predictable date can be sold into a regular trade with chop bars, food sellers and households that buy a bird each week. The aim is to keep the flock moving through the year, so that cash arrives in steady amounts rather than in one lump. Our hatchery supports that rhythm with boxes that leave on the day of hatch, so you can plan intake around your buyers.

Chop bars and broilers: what the buyer wants

A chop bar buyer wants a bird that looks right, weighs right and arrives fresh. Consistency matters more than having the biggest bird on the day. If one batch is light and another is heavy, the cook has to adjust portions, and the buyer notices. A steady live weight is what most chop bar buyers ask for, which is why our listed live broiler price is set for a bird of about 2.5 kg.

Plan your sales in regular batches. Staggered boxes, placed a few weeks apart, let you sell a steady number each week instead of a flood of birds in one week and none in the next. Tell us how many birds you can sell each week and we will help you plan how many boxes to order and how often.

Ross 308 or Cobb 500: choosing the broiler

Both Ross 308 and Cobb 500 start at GH₵ 20 per chick, so the choice is about your feed programme, your house and the buyer you serve, not the price on day one. Both are fast-growing broilers that need careful feeding and good ventilation. Treat the breed choice as part of a plan. Decide the sale weight and date first, then choose the breed that fits your management. Our broiler chicks guide goes further into both.

The forest climate around Obuasi and what it asks of your house

Obuasi sits in the forest belt of the Ashanti Region, where the climate is warm and humid for most of the year. The rains come in two spells, a longer main season in the middle of the year and a shorter spell later on, so the ground is often wet and the air heavy. That combination makes ventilation the first thing to get right, because damp air holds ammonia and stale heat in the house.

Keep the litter dry and turned, check drinkers for leaks, and avoid overcrowding. Damp litter is a common reason young broilers become unwell in forest towns. If your house sits in a low spot, raise the floor or move the house to a drier site before you buy chicks.

The road from Kasoa to Obuasi in about five hours

Obuasi is about 280 km from our hatchery and usually takes around five hours by road. The trip runs north into the Ashanti Region, and the final stretch reaches Obuasi, which lies south-west of Kumasi. Traffic in the larger towns can slow the vehicle, so the trip is best planned for a full morning or afternoon at the station rather than a quick stop.

Because it is a shorter trip than the far north, the main risks are a late start and a station that is not ready. Message us the day before the hatch so we can confirm the dispatch window, and have someone at the station when the vehicle arrives. Our delivery page explains how dispatch works across Ghana.

Arrival day in humid heat

Humid weather changes how chicks behave on arrival. They need warmth, but a closed brooder in a humid room can quickly become stuffy. Set the heat source at a steady level, open the vents, and check that the litter stays dry. If the room smells strongly of ammonia within the first day, the litter is too wet or the ventilation is too weak.

Offer water first. Many chicks take a little time to find drinkers in a new house, so place a shallow tray near the heat and show them the water. Put feed where they can see it, and keep the first days quiet and low in traffic.

Vaccination and a vet plan for your flock

Before a box leaves Kasoa, every chick has been protected at our hatchery against Marek's, Newcastle (NCD), Gumboro (IBD), infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis. That closes the early gaps. The batch record that comes with each order lists which vaccines were given and when, so your vet can plan any boosters.

Follow your vet's schedule for boosters and for any further protection your area needs. Keep the batch record with your flock notes, and show it to your vet at the first visit. Our buying guide lists the other questions to ask any supplier about vaccination.

A worked example: 100 broilers for a chop bar

Here is a simple model for a chop-bar supplier in Obuasi. The chick cost uses our current from-price, and the gross value uses our listed live broiler price. Feed, housing, losses and transport are not included, so read the second row as an upper limit, not a profit.

    ItemQuantityPrice each (GH₵)Total (GH₵)
    Ross 308 day-old chicks100 (2 boxes)202,000
Gross value if all 100 sell live at about 2.5 kg10011011,000

The chicks cost GH₵ 2,000 at the from-price. Every bird that reaches market weight and sells at the listed price adds GH₵ 110 to the gross, but feed and losses come off that figure first. Use the gross value only to size your plan, and work out the real margin from your own feed and loss records.

Festive peaks: Christmas, Easter, Eid and Odwira

In Obuasi, the festive calendar matters as much as the daily chop-bar trade. Christmas and Easter bring families home and lift the number of people who buy chicken for meals and gifts. Eid brings its own demand. In the Ashanti Region, Odwira is another season when many households plan for celebrations and visitors, so check the dates locally before you fix a sale.

Work backwards from the date. A broiler needs several weeks to reach a saleable weight, so a flock aimed at Christmas should be hatched well before the festival, not in the last week of November. Our Christmas broiler timing guide walks through the same calculation.

Mistakes that cost broiler farmers the most

    • Ordering without a buyer. A flock with no buyer in mind is a flock that sits and eats. Agree the sale first.
    • Overcrowding the house. Crowded birds grow unevenly and damp the litter faster.
    • Buying feed in small bags when prices are high. Plan the feed bill before the first box arrives, so you are not caught short mid-cycle.
    • Skipping the brooder test. A lamp that fails on the first night can cost a batch in hours.
    • Ignoring the batch record. Without it, your vet cannot plan boosters properly.

Each of these mistakes is avoidable with a plan. Send us a WhatsApp on +233 24 915 1503 and we will go through the list with you before you book.

Feed and records: the two numbers that make or break a broiler cycle

Two numbers decide whether a broiler batch makes money: how much feed each bird eats on the way to market weight, and how many birds you lose along the way. Feed is usually the largest cost a broiler farmer carries, so buy it with a plan. Check the feed price before you order chicks, and agree a supply with a dealer who can deliver steadily through the whole cycle.

Write down every feed bag, every death and the date of each. A simple notebook is enough. After one cycle you will know your real cost per bird, and that figure helps you set a price with your buyers. Our guide to a poultry farm budget shows how to set up that calculation before you buy your first box.

Keep the record near the house so it is filled in each day, not from memory at the end of the week. Your vet will also ask for it when a problem appears, and a clear record shortens the visit.

    Questions farmers ask

Do you deliver day-old broiler chicks to Obuasi?

Yes. We deliver to all 16 regions of Ghana, including the Ashanti Region. Boxes of 50 leave our Opeikuma hatchery in Kasoa on the day they hatch and travel to an agreed station in Obuasi. We quote delivery in writing before any payment.

Ross 308 or Cobb 500, which should a chop-bar supplier choose?

Both start at GH₵ 20 per chick, so the decision rests on your feed programme, your house and the buyer you serve. Choose the breed that fits how you plan to feed and sell. Tell us your sale weight and date, and we will help you decide between them.

How much does a box of broiler chicks cost in Obuasi?

A box of 50 Ross 308 or Cobb 500 is GH₵ 1,000 at the current from-price of GH₵ 20 per chick. The price is confirmed in writing when you order, and delivery to Obuasi is quoted before any money moves.

What live broiler price do you list?

Our listed live broiler price is GH₵ 110 for a bird of about 2.5 kg, and the dressed broiler price is GH₵ 120. Those are the prices we list for grown birds. Prices can change, so confirm the figure with us on WhatsApp before you plan a sale.

How do I keep a broiler house dry and aired in forest heat?

Use good ventilation without draughts at bird height, keep the litter dry and turned, check drinkers for leaks, and avoid overcrowding. Notice the ammonia smell at the start of each day. A strong smell means the house needs more air or drier litter. Follow your vet's advice on other management.

Which vaccines do your chicks receive?

At the hatchery, each chick is protected against Marek's, Newcastle (NCD), Gumboro (IBD), infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis. The batch record tells your vet what was given, so boosters can be planned. Follow your vet's schedule for any further protection.

What happens if some chicks are dead on arrival?

Dead on arrival chicks are replaced free in our next hatch. Count the box at the station, send a photo of the count to +233 24 915 1503 on WhatsApp the same day, and keep the record for your files.

Can I order a single box as a trial?

Our minimum order is one box of 50 chicks. Many first-time buyers start with a single box to test their house and buyers before ordering larger batches. Message us to talk through the plan, and we will help you choose the breed.
