Kumasi buys eggs by the tray

Kumasi is the largest city we send chicks to by road, and it is a place where layers matter more than they do in Accra. Egg traders and shops in the big central markets buy by the tray, and farms on the edge of the city and in the towns along the northern roads keep flocks to feed that trade. Broilers still sell well, especially to chop bars and to households that cook for family gatherings, but the first question we ask a Kumasi farmer is whether they want eggs or meat in the first year.

The Ashanti belt has a long habit of keeping birds, from the compound flock to the larger house on the outskirts. A farm that begins with a single house of 100 birds can learn its feed costs and its market before it grows. We would rather see a farm expand in steps than fill a whole shed on the first day and struggle to sell what it raises.

Layer or broiler: what Kumasi farms usually start with

The table shows the starting points we most often discuss with Kumasi farmers. The breed follows the product you intend to sell, so begin with the market and work back to the bird.

Farm typeStart withReason
Egg unit selling trays at marketHy-Line BrownStrong laying from a brown layer line

If a farm wants both products, plan two sheds from the start. Adding the second one later usually costs more than building it properly the first time.

Kumasi's climate: forest-edge rain and cooler mornings

Kumasi sits inland in the forest-transition belt, well above the coast and further from the sea breeze. It has two rainy seasons, a longer one that runs roughly from April into July and a shorter one from September to November. From December to February the harmattan brings dry, dusty air down from the north, and the cool mornings of that season are what surprise farmers who are used to the coast.

In Kumasi the risk for a brooder is less about daytime heat than about the swing between day and night. Chicks that were warm at noon can chill by four in the morning. Check the lamp and the floor at night, keep a draught break on the side the wind comes from, and make sure the brooder is covered in the harmattan weeks so the dust does not settle on the drinkers.

Four to five hours on the road to Kumasi

The distance from our hatchery in Opeikuma, Kasoa, to Kumasi is about 240 km, and the journey usually takes four to five hours. That sits comfortably inside the window a day-old chick can travel on the yolk it absorbed before hatching, which is up to about 48 hours. The journey itself is manageable. The danger lies in a box left in the sun at a roadside stop, or in a vehicle with no air moving through it.

For that reason we ask Kumasi buyers to name a handover point, such as a station, a filling station or a farm gate, and to have someone there when the vehicle arrives. A box that waits on the roadside in Kumasi traffic is an hour the chicks spend away from warmth and water. Tell us the time you expect the birds, and we will plan the dispatch around it.

The first hour in a Kumasi brooder

Open the box in a quiet, shaded place, not on a verandah in full sun. Count the birds, look for any that are dead or weak, and note the count on the spot. Send the count with a photo to +233 24 915 1503 the same day, since dead on arrival chicks are replaced free in the next hatch.

Move the chicks into a brooder that is already lit and watered. Let them drink first, then set out feed on a flat tray. Watch the spread of the birds for the next hour. Huddling under the lamp suggests they are still cold, and birds that keep their distance from the lamp suggest it is too hot. Kumasi nights are cooler than the coast, so keep the lamp on through the night in the first week rather than switching it off at dusk.

Starting layers right in Kumasi

A layer batch is a longer commitment than a broiler batch, and the first months set the pattern for the rest of its life. Before the birds arrive, decide when the flock will move from chick feed to grower feed and then to layer feed, and agree that plan with your feed supplier and your vet. Our batch record tells you what each batch received at the hatchery, so your vet can plan the boosters without guessing.

Layers begin to lay in their later months, so do not expect eggs in the first weeks. Keep the house clean and dry, keep feeders and drinkers at a height the young birds can reach, and recheck the house each morning for chicks that have fallen behind. A layer that is slow to grow usually lays late, so the early weeks matter more than they look.

Costs for a Kumasi starter flock

Our starting prices are per chick, with a minimum order of one box of 50. Every figure is a from-price, and the final amount is confirmed in writing before any money moves. Delivery to Kumasi is quoted separately and confirmed before payment.

Worked example. A Kumasi farm that wants 200 layers for market trays would buy four boxes of Hy-Line Brown, which comes to GH₵ 4,600 for the chicks. A farm that wants 200 birds for meat and home use could buy four boxes of Sasso for GH₵ 2,600. The layer option costs GH₵ 2,000 more at the start, and that gap should be measured against the eggs it will produce across its laying life, not against the price of a single bird.

Plan your order dates

Pick the day you want chicks in your brooder. We'll show when to book and when the birds should be ready.

The Kumasi calendar and the buying year

Kumasi's buying year turns on a few dates. Odwira, the Ashanti festival, is held in the autumn, and households and chiefs' houses in the region take part in festivities that bring extra visitors and extra meat. Akwasidae, the Sunday observance that falls every six weeks, keeps some demand steady through the year. Christmas and Easter bring the usual peaks, and Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha add their own weeks of demand.

Because Christmas is about nine weeks away from today, a Kumasi broiler batch aimed at the December market should be placed in early November. Farms that plan layers for the Christmas egg market should have their birds in the house well before then. We keep the dates in view when we confirm a hatch, so tell us the festival you are targeting.

Imported layer lines for Ashanti buyers

Some Kumasi farms look to Europe for a line that is not raised locally. We import from hatcheries in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, with each shipment travelling under a veterinary health certificate. Imported chicks are cleared at Kotoka in Accra under a Ghana import permit from the Veterinary Services Directorate, and then the birds travel the road north to Kumasi.

That extra leg matters for planning. Book imported chicks three to four weeks ahead, and allow for the time between clearance and the road journey. For most Kumasi farms, the local hatch is the better everyday choice, and imports make sense when a buyer or a contract asks for a specific line. The imported day-old chicks page lists what the paperwork involves.

What Kumasi farms get wrong with the first batch

    1. Buying layers without a plan for the laying months. The birds need feed, space and light at the right stages. Without a timetable the flock often starts laying late and unevenly.
    2. Leaving a harmattan shed uncovered. The cold dry nights and the dust both hit young birds hard. A closed draught break and a clean drinker cost little compared with a lost batch.
    3. Waiting at the station with no plan. A box that sits without a receiver is the easiest problem on the road to Kumasi to prevent.

A short checklist before the first box

Check these items a few days before the chicks are due, and you will avoid most of the questions we are asked once a box has arrived.

    • Product chosen: eggs, meat or a mix, with the market named.
    • House cleaned, dried and warmed, with lamp, drinkers and feeders in place.
    • Handover point and receiver named, with a working phone number.
    • Starter feed in store and the grower feed date agreed.
    • Price and delivery cost agreed in writing on WhatsApp.
    • Vaccination and booster dates from the batch record in your vet's diary.

    How to order for Kumasi

Send the breed, the number of boxes, the date you need the birds and the handover point in Kumasi to +233 24 915 1503 on WhatsApp. We will reply with a written price and a delivery cost, and you pay only after both are agreed. We take mobile money, bank transfers and cash. You can also use the order form, and the current figures are on the price list.

Collection from our farm in Opeikuma, Kasoa, is possible by appointment, and it saves the delivery cost for a buyer who can drive down. Orders of 1,000 chicks or more are quoted by hand, so contact us early for large layer flocks. For the way boxes are packed and carried, read the delivery page.

Support once the birds are in Kumasi

Advice is free, both before the order and after the birds land. In the first weeks, call or message us about feed, temperature or any bird that falls behind the others. For vaccines and boosters, follow your vet's schedule, and use the batch record we send to plan them. Any question about which breed suits a changed plan can be taken to the breed notes.

If you are weighing a layer line against a broiler line, the layer chicks page and the broiler chicks page set out the trade-offs side by side. The Ashanti Region page covers the wider region around the city.

    Questions farmers ask

Do you deliver day-old chicks to Kumasi?

Yes. Our hatchery in Opeikuma, Kasoa, sends chicks to Kumasi about 240 km away, usually a four to five hour road journey. Chicks leave on the day they hatch in ventilated boxes of 50 and are handed over at a station or handover point agreed in advance. Delivery is priced separately and agreed on paper before any payment.

How long can day-old chicks travel to Kumasi?

The road trip takes about four to five hours, well inside the period a day-old chick can travel on the yolk it absorbed before hatching, which is up to about 48 hours. The risk comes from heat and waiting, not from the distance, so we plan dispatch and handover carefully.

Should a Kumasi farm start with layers or broilers?

It depends on what you plan to sell. Egg trays for the Kumasi market point to Hy-Line Brown or Bovans Brown. Chop bars and family orders point to Ross 308 or Cobb 500. A compound flock with mixed sales often suits Sasso. Tell us the product and the market, and we will recommend the line.

How much does a box of 50 Hy-Line Brown chicks cost?

A box of 50 Hy-Line Brown chicks is GH₵ 1,150 at our starting price of GH₵ 23 per chick. It is a from-price, confirmed in writing before any money moves. Delivery to Kumasi is quoted separately, so ask for the chick price and the delivery figure together on WhatsApp.

Can I collect chicks from the farm rather than paying for delivery?

Yes. Collection from our Opeikuma, Kasoa farm is by appointment and suits Kumasi buyers who can send their own vehicle. Message +233 24 915 1503 to book a time, and we will prepare the box and confirm the count before you leave.

What do I do if some chicks are dead on arrival in Kumasi?

Count the birds as soon as the box opens and send a photo of the count and any dead birds on WhatsApp the same day. Losses on arrival are replaced at no cost in the next hatch. Keep the box until we have seen the photo, so the replacement can be matched to your order.

Can I import layer chicks for a Kumasi farm?

Yes, if your buyer or contract needs a line we do not raise locally. Our imports arrive from European hatcheries, travelling with a health certificate from a veterinarian, and they pass through Kotoka in Accra on a Ghana import permit. Book three to four weeks ahead.

When should a Kumasi farm order for the Christmas market?

Work back from the week you want birds on sale. Broiler batches for the Christmas weeks should be ordered in early November, and layers need more lead time, so they go in earlier. We can turn your sale week into a full dated plan on request.
