Peri-urban keeping on the Adenta side of Accra
Adenta sits on the north-eastern side of Accra, where the city starts to loosen into larger plots, new housing and patches of open ground. That changes the kind of poultry keeping you find there. Some keepers have a proper poultry house behind a family compound. Others run a small farm on rented land and sell birds to people nearby. A growing number treat a few houses as a side income while they work in town.
All three groups ask the same practical questions. Can I get the chicks from a reliable source, will they arrive healthy, and what is the real cost once I count feed and housing? Our hatchery is in Kasoa, so the chicks travel a fair distance to reach you. We plan the hatch around your delivery date to keep that journey as short in time as we can, and we always confirm the delivery cost before you commit.
Space, land and the case for a proper house
More land makes it tempting to build big at once. Resist the urge to fill a large shed on day one if you have never raised chicks before. A single well-run house of a few hundred birds teaches you more than three sheds managed in a rush. Once you know how your feed arrives, how your drinkers behave and how the birds respond to your weather, you can add houses with much less risk.
Ventilation matters more in a closed house than most new keepers expect. Good airflow keeps ammonia down and the air fresh, but it must not blow directly onto day-old chicks. Use curtains or boards to control the wind, and check the litter every morning. Damp litter is one of the earliest warning signs that something in the house needs attention.
Ross 308 for a farm-scale broiler cycle
Ross 308 is the broiler many farms use for a full cycle, and the starting price is GH₵ 20 per chick, or GH₵ 1,000 a box of 50. For a farm-scale plan, the question is not only the chick price but the feed, the labour and the day you sell. A cycle that runs a few days long can wipe out the margin, so set the sale date before you set the chick order. Our broiler profit calculator lets you test different sale weeks and see how the numbers move.
Read the broiler chick page for the wider picture on buying, and check the breeds page if you are still choosing between broiler lines.
Hy-Line Brown for a farm with laying houses
Hy-Line Brown is an imported laying breed, and the starting price is GH₵ 23 per chick, or GH₵ 1,150 a box of 50. On a farm, layers are a steady income rather than a single sale. The laying house has to be set up well, the feed has to be consistent, and the egg collection and sales routine needs to be settled before the hens start to lay. Plan the egg store and the buyers before the chicks arrive, not after.
Layers also need a clear rearing plan. Birds that are reared well tend to start laying on schedule and hold their lay for longer. The layer chick page covers what to expect from laying flocks, and the layer egg profit calculator helps you test the egg numbers against your feed bill.
What the starting prices come to for a farm order
These figures are the starting prices for the two breeds Adenta farms ask about most. Your written quote will show the exact amount for your order, and delivery is quoted separately before any money changes hands.
| Order | Ross 308 (broiler) | Hy-Line Brown (layer) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 box of 50 | GH₵ 1,000 | GH₵ 1,150 |
| 2 boxes of 50 | GH₵ 2,000 | GH₵ 2,300 |
| 5 boxes of 50 | GH₵ 5,000 | GH₵ 5,750 |
| 10 boxes of 50 | GH₵ 10,000 | GH₵ 11,500 |
A farm-scale order is usually several boxes. If you are planning a larger hatch, the day-old chicks cost calculator helps you add the chick price, feed and labour into one figure. See the full price list for the other breeds we supply.
Requesting a quote for a farm-gate delivery
A farm order is easier to quote when the delivery point is clear. Give us the details below in one message, and the written quote will come back with the delivery cost included.
- The breed, and the number of boxes of 50.
- The date your house will be ready to receive the chicks.
- The exact farm location, with a landmark or a gate description the driver can find.
- Your payment method: mobile money, bank transfer or cash.
- Any special timing, such as a second batch you want the following month.
Send the message on WhatsApp or call our line. If you want to see the operation first, farm visits are by appointment at the Opeikuma hatchery. Our frequently asked questions page covers the usual questions about ordering and receiving.
Delivering chicks to a farm gate
We deliver to all 16 regions, and the Adenta area is one of the routes we plan for regularly. The delivery cost is quoted in writing before you pay, so the figure is settled before the chicks leave the hatchery. Chicks are dispatched the day they hatch, which means your delivery date and the hatch date are linked. Confirm the date a few days ahead so the hatch and the transport can be lined up.

When the vehicle reaches the farm, have a clear path to the house and a space ready for the crate. Count the birds with the driver before the crate is moved. Message us the same day with the count and a photo. A chick that dies on arrival gets a free replacement in the next hatch. Full details are on our delivery page, and the delivery guide has more on receiving an order.
Predators, fencing and night security
Open land brings visitors that a backyard does not. Dogs, rats, snakes and birds of prey can all be a threat to a flock, and night is when most losses happen. A well-built house with a secure door and a sound fence does most of the work. Check the wire for gaps, close the vents at night, and keep the feed store sealed so pests do not come looking for a meal.
If your farm is remote, a night watchman or a trusted neighbour checking the house is worth the cost. Keep a torch and a simple log of the nightly check. A short written record of who checked the house and when shows you where the gaps are before a loss shows you.
Biosecurity when you run more than one house
Once you have two or three houses, the way you move between them matters. Keep a pair of boots or a set of overshoes for each house, and do not carry the same footwear from an older flock into a newly stocked one. Wash hands between houses, keep tools in their own place, and clean the drinkers and feeders with a suitable disinfectant between batches.
Keep visitors to a minimum, especially in the first weeks after a new batch arrives. A visitor who has been near other poultry can carry something into a clean house without meaning to. Set up a simple sign-in or a standing rule for who may enter, and stick to it.

Send breed, number and town. We reply with price, hatch date and delivery cost.
Records and vaccination on a farm
Each chick leaves the hatchery already vaccinated for Marek's disease, Newcastle disease, Gumboro (IBD), infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis. A batch record comes with the order. On a farm, that record should live in the office file with your feed invoices and your sales notes, because it will be asked for by a vet, a buyer or a lender if you ever need one.
Your own follow-up programme is a separate job. The vaccination schedule calculator helps you lay out dates, and your vet should confirm the plan for your own flock and your local disease risk.
Feed supply and storage for a farm order
Halaal Farms does not sell feed or equipment. A farm needs a feed supply lined up before the chicks arrive, with enough starter feed for the first weeks and grower feed for the rest of the cycle. Ask your supplier about delivery to your farm, the bag sizes they stock, and how they store feed on their side. Buying a month's supply at once can save trips, but only if the store stays dry and cool.
Store feed off the floor, away from walls, and in a rodent-proof bin. Use the oldest bags first, and check for mould or a sour smell before you open a new bag. The poultry feed calculator gives a rough estimate of how much feed a flock of your size will need, so you can plan purchases without running short.
Heat and lamps for a bigger house
A house of a few hundred chicks needs more than one lamp. Spread the heat across the floor so the birds can move to the warm spot or the cooler edge as they please. A single lamp in one corner tends to pull the whole flock into a tight pile, and a pile is where birds get crushed or chilled at the edges. Use two or three heat points, hang them at a height you can adjust, and check the spread every morning and evening.
Keep a spare bulb or heater element on hand. A failed lamp on the first night is a problem you can prevent with one cheap spare. Check the wiring before the chicks arrive, and keep cables away from litter and drinkers. Electricity can be unreliable in some areas, so think about how you will keep the house warm through a power cut before the order is confirmed.
Neighbouring suburbs and how supply compares
Adenta is one of several Accra suburbs where keepers are growing their flocks. Demand looks a little different in each one, depending on land, housing and the kind of buyers nearby. Yards in the denser parts of the city tend to be smaller, while the more open edges have more room to spread out. Whichever side of the city you are on, the ordering steps and the starting prices stay the same, and the delivery cost is quoted for your specific location.
If you want to compare the neighbouring pages, look at the Madina page, the Accra page and the Tema page. For the broader planning tools, the poultry calculators hub brings them together.
Questions farmers ask
How much are day-old chicks in Adenta?
Ross 308 begins at GH₵ 20 a chick and Hy-Line Brown at GH₵ 23. Boxes of 50 come to GH₵ 1,000 and GH₵ 1,150 respectively. Your exact figure appears in the written quote for your order.
Do you deliver to farms outside the main Adenta road?
Yes. We deliver to all 16 regions, and farm gates in the surrounding area are part of that. Give us a clear location with a landmark, and the delivery cost will be quoted in writing before you pay.
What is the minimum order for a farm?
Our minimum for any breed is one box of 50, and farms often go well above it. Farms usually order several boxes, so a larger order is simply a larger number of boxes at the same starting price.
Is a visit to the hatchery possible before I buy?
Yes, by appointment. Book a visit through WhatsApp or by phone, and we will explain what to expect at the Opeikuma hatchery in Kasoa before you travel.
Which breed is better for an Adenta farm, Ross 308 or Hy-Line Brown?
Ross 308 suits a farm that plans to sell birds for meat at a set date. Hy-Line Brown suits a farm that wants a steady egg income. Decide on your sales plan first, then choose the breed that matches it.
What happens if chicks die on arrival?
A chick that dies on arrival gets a free replacement in the next hatch. Count the birds before the crate is moved and send us the count and a photo the same day.
Do you sell feed or equipment for the house?
No. Halaal Farms sells day-old chicks and does not sell feed, drinkers, feeders or other equipment. Arrange supplies with local sellers before the chicks arrive.
Is vaccination done before the chicks leave?
Yes. Each chick is protected at the hatchery against Marek's, Newcastle, Gumboro, infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis, and the batch record travels with the order.
