Ten Boxes Later: Running a 500-Bird Broiler Batch

Five hundred day-old chicks is ten boxes of 50, and it is the point where a backyard project turns into a real weekly job. Ross 308 and Cobb 500 both start at GH₵ 1,000 a box, so ten boxes come to GH₵ 10,000 at our published starting price. Chicks leave the hatchery the day they hatch, and we deliver to all 16 regions.

Is Five Hundred the Right Next Step

Going from a single box to five hundred birds is a bigger jump than most people expect. A hundred birds can be looked after between other jobs. Five hundred needs a plan for housing, feed, labour and cash flow that holds up when something goes wrong in week four.

You are ready for this size when you have finished at least one batch cleanly, when you know your buyer and their weekly or monthly needs, and when you have a place to brood chicks separately from the finished birds. If any of those is missing, a smaller batch first will teach you more than a big one would.

Ross 308 or Cobb 500 at This Scale

Both breeds are fast-growing broilers, and both are sold at the same starting price of GH₵ 20 a chick or GH₵ 1,000 a box of 50. The choice between them matters less than the way you run the flock, but it is still worth thinking about before you order.

  • Ross 308 is the breed most small and medium producers in Ghana will recognise from their own research. It is a sensible default when you want a predictable cycle and a feed programme that is easy to find locally.
  • Cobb 500 is also a fast broiler and suits the same kind of house. Ask your feed supplier which programme they support best, because the feed plan matters more than the name on the box.

Whichever you pick, buy the breed your buyers already like. A bird that grows well but is the wrong size or colour for your customers is harder to sell. Our breeds page lists the full range we hatch, and the broiler chicks for sale page explains the options in more detail.

What Ten Boxes Cost at Starting Prices

Our published starting price is GH₵ 1,000 a box, so ten boxes start at GH₵ 10,000 before delivery. We confirm the exact amount in writing for each order, and we quote delivery cost in writing too. Mobile money, bank transfer and cash are all accepted. We do not take online card payments and we do not offer instalments.

Two boxes (100)2,000About 10 square metresOne brooder ring
Ten boxes (500)10,000About 50 square metresTwo or more brooder rings

The floor figures assume a planning density of around 10 birds per square metre near market weight. Your house may be able to take more or fewer birds depending on ventilation and local conditions, so treat the table as a starting point. The day-old chicks cost calculator lets you change the batch size and see the chick total move.

Housing for Five Hundred, From Brooder to Finish

A batch of 500 is best split into stages. The brooding area is small and warm, with separate rings or partitions so you can manage the first two weeks closely. Once the birds are feathered and strong, they move into the main house, which must be dry, well ventilated and sized for the weight they reach at the end.

Ventilation is the make-or-break item. Five hundred birds produce a lot of heat and moisture. Open sides, ridge gaps, curtains or fans where you have power, and litter that stays dry, all keep respiratory disease away. A damp, stuffy house is where a healthy batch starts to lose weight and birds.

Plan the feeder and drinker layout before the chicks arrive. Birds should reach water and feed without crowding, and you should be able to walk the whole house in a few minutes to check them.

A Feed Budget You Can Defend

At this size, feed is the number that decides whether the batch makes money. Five hundred birds eat a great deal across six weeks, and the cost moves every time the market moves. A budget built on last month's bag price is already out of date.

Work it in stages. Estimate the starter, grower and finisher feed each batch needs, using the bird weight you are aiming for and the feed programme your supplier recommends. Then price each stage separately and add a margin for spillage and waste, which is easy to underestimate when feed is stored loosely.

Store feed dry, off the floor and in a rodent-proof place. A sack of feed lost to damp is money you paid for and never got to use. Our poultry feed calculator gives a starting estimate by stage, which you can then check with your supplier.

Labour: Why One Person Is Not Enough

One determined person can manage a hundred birds. Five hundred is a different job. You will need someone to help with feeding, cleaning, weighing and selling, and you will need that person to be reliable on the days you cannot be there.

Write a simple daily list for your helper: what to check, when to refill feed and water, how to report a bird that looks unwell, and who to call. Pay attention to how the birds look at the end of each day, and make sure your helper knows what normal looks like. A helper who knows the routine can catch small problems before they become large ones.

If you cannot afford a permanent helper, arrange cover for the weeks when you know you will be away. Find out in advance who will check the birds, and make sure they have the phone numbers they need.

Brooding Five Hundred at Once

Five hundred chicks arriving together is a lot to brood well. Ten boxes means a lot of bodies producing heat and needing the same warmth at the same time. Split them into groups in separate brooder rings, so each group has room and you can watch every corner.

Chicks should find feed and water within the first hours. Spread feed on clean paper or trays at first, then move to proper feeders. Check that every chick has crop filled and is moving around. Chicks that sit away from the group, or that stand with their wings drooped, need attention quickly.

Keep the brooding area clean and dry. Replace wet litter early, and do not let the temperature swing too far between day and night.

Profit Potential and How to Test It

Profit at this size depends on four things: the weight you reach, the number of birds that get there, the feed you spend to get them there, and the price your buyers pay. Change any one of these and the result moves, sometimes sharply.

Test the sums before you order. Start with 500 birds, then assume a loss margin, a feed cost per bird and a selling price per kilogram that you can actually get in your area. Subtract chicks, feed, housing, labour and transport. Then run the same sums with a lower price and a higher loss rate. If the batch still pays, you have a plan worth trying. If it only pays in the best case, reduce the size.

Market weights for these breeds are usually reached in roughly five to six weeks in good conditions, but that varies with feed, heat and health. Use our broiler profit calculator to test different scenarios with your own figures.

    Bulk Pricing Without Surprises

People often ask about bulk discounts. The honest answer is that our published figures are starting prices per chick and per box of 50, and the exact amount for your order is confirmed in writing before you pay. Ten boxes start at GH₵ 10,000 on those published figures, and the written quote is the number you should plan around.

Ask for the full quote to include chicks, delivery and any extra items before you transfer money. A clear written figure at the start is worth more than a verbal promise that changes on the day the chicks are dispatched. If you are comparing sellers, put every quote side by side in the same format.

For larger ordering, our bulk day-old chicks page explains how volume orders are handled, and the thousand day-old chicks order page covers the next size up.

Vaccination, Biosecurity and Records at Scale

Every chick from our hatchery is vaccinated against Marek's, Newcastle, Gumboro (IBD), infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis before dispatch, and a batch record comes with the order. That record is the start of your own records, not the end of them.

At 500 birds, a disease outbreak spreads faster and costs more. Keep visitors to a minimum, wash hands and boots before entering the house, and keep the area around the house clean. Record every vaccination date, every death with a likely cause if you can see one, and the feed used each week. A clear record lets you spot a problem early and tells your vet what happened.

Our vaccination schedule calculator can help you plan the booster dates for your own batch.

Sales Planning for a Full Batch

A batch of 500 finishing in the same week creates a selling problem. You cannot sell that many birds to one buyer overnight, and chilled birds do not keep long. Plan the sales in advance, with two or three buyers and a clear schedule for when each lot leaves the house.

Common buyers at this scale include chop bars, food vendors, cold stores and families who buy in bulk for events. Agree on quantities, weights and collection times before the birds are ready. Price by weight in a way both sides understand, and write the agreement down, even if it is short.

If you cannot sell the whole batch at once, consider staggering your brood dates so birds finish across two or three weeks instead of all at once. Your sales become easier, and your feed and labour spread more evenly.

    Questions farmers ask

How much do 500 day-old chicks cost in Ghana?

At our published starting prices, 500 Ross 308 or Cobb 500 chicks come to GH₵ 10,000 for ten boxes of 50. The exact figure is confirmed in writing for each order, and delivery is quoted separately before you pay.

How much space does a 500-bird broiler batch need?

A planning figure of around 10 birds per square metre near market weight suggests about 50 square metres of floor for 500 birds. Ventilation and local conditions change that, so check your own house before ordering.

Do I need a helper for 500 broilers?

Most people raising 500 birds find one helper makes the work manageable. The daily checks, feeding, cleaning and selling take more time than they first appear to, and cover is needed when you are away.

Is Ross 308 or Cobb 500 better for 500 birds?

Both are fast-growing broilers sold at the same starting price. Choose the breed your buyers prefer and the one your feed supplier supports best. The feed programme usually matters more than the breed name.

Can I get a bulk discount on ten boxes?

Our published figures are starting prices, and the exact amount for your order is confirmed in writing before you pay. Ask for the full quote in writing, including delivery, and compare it with other sellers in the same format.

How long does a broiler batch take to reach market weight?

In good conditions, broilers of these breeds usually reach market weight in roughly five to six weeks. Feed, heat and health all affect that timing, so weigh a sample of birds each week to track progress.

Can you deliver 500 chicks to my town?

We deliver to all 16 regions. Chicks are dispatched the day they hatch, and chicks can travel about 48 hours on their yolk reserve. Delivery cost is quoted in writing before you pay.

What happens if some chicks are dead on arrival?

A chick that arrives dead is swapped for a free one in the next hatch. Tell us as soon as possible after delivery so we can record the loss on your batch record, and keep a note of the number and condition of the birds you received.
