Who keeps birds in Ashaiman and why they call us

Ashaiman is a dense township, and most of the keeping we hear about happens in small spaces. Some people run a few birds behind the house for the family table. Others run a steady little flock to sell eggs or grown birds to neighbours. A few have grown a yard into a proper house. Each of these keepers faces the same question first: where do I get healthy chicks, and what will they cost me?

Our hatchery is in Kasoa, which is a separate trip from Ashaiman, so the first thing a keeper wants to know is whether the chicks will arrive in good condition. They will, provided the order is clear and the delivery is planned. Dispatch takes place on the day of hatch, so the chicks do not sit around waiting for a truck. The rest of this page explains how to order, how to receive them, and how to brood them in a space that is not large.

Brooding chicks in a small Ashaiman yard

A small yard is not a problem if you plan the brooder before the chicks come. Day-old chicks need warmth, clean dry litter, fresh water and feed they can reach easily. They do not need a big house on day one. A corner of a room, a covered box, or a section of a store with good airflow can work for the first few weeks, as long as it stays warm, dry and free of draughts.

Set your heat source a day before the chicks arrive so the brooder is at a steady temperature when they step in. Watch the birds rather than the thermometer alone. If they huddle tightly under the heat, they are cold. If they spread out and pant near the edges, they are too warm. Adjust the lamp height until they move about comfortably.

Ross 308 for a meat run from a small house

If your goal is a meat run, Ross 308 is the breed most keepers start with. The starting price is GH₵ 20 per chick, or GH₵ 1,000 for a box of 50. A box is the smallest order we take, so a keeper with a small house should plan the number of birds around that box before ordering. Ross 308 is widely used across Ghana, so you will find people nearby who understand the breed and its feed needs.

Plan the sale date when you order. Broilers reach market weight in a set window, and a bird kept too long costs you more in feed than it earns back. Work out the feed bill with our broiler profit calculator before you commit to a number of birds, and read the broiler chick page for the buying side.

Hy-Line Brown for eggs from a backyard house

Layers are a different job. Hy-Line Brown is an imported laying breed, and the starting price is GH₵ 23 per chick, or GH₵ 1,150 for a box of 50. Hens of this type are usually kept for the egg, not the pot, so the question is how many eggs you want each week and where you plan to sell them. A box of 50 gives you a flock you can manage in a modest yard, and the eggs start coming once the birds mature.

Ask yourself before you order whether you have a steady buyer for eggs. A flock that lays well but has nowhere to sell is a cost, not an income. The layer chick page covers what to expect from laying birds, and the layer egg profit calculator lets you test the numbers.

Starting prices for Ashaiman orders

These are the starting figures for the two breeds most Ashaiman keepers ask about. The final price for your order is the one in your written quote, and delivery is quoted separately before you pay.

Ordering from Ashaiman, step by step

The ordering process is simple, and it is quicker when you arrive with the details. Use the steps below.

  1. Choose your breed and the number of boxes, counting in boxes of 50.
  2. Tell us the date you want the chicks, or the week you can receive them.
  3. Give us your exact area in Ashaiman, including a landmark, so the delivery can be quoted properly.
  4. Choose how you will pay: mobile money, bank transfer, or cash.
  5. Wait for the written quote, check it against your message, and confirm.

Orders go in by WhatsApp or by phone. Farm visits to the hatchery in Opeikuma are by appointment, so if you want to see the operation before you buy, book a visit first. For a general overview of how we work, the frequently asked questions page answers the common points.

Delivery to Ashaiman and receiving the chicks

We deliver to all 16 regions, and Ashaiman is one of the places our buyers ask about most often. The delivery cost is quoted in writing before you pay, so you know the figure before any chicks move. The chicks travel on their yolk reserve, which lets them manage a normal journey, but the best start happens when they reach a ready brooder with clean water within reach.

When the crate arrives, open it at the drop-off point with the driver present. Count the birds, look at their activity, and check for any that are dead on arrival. Message us the same day with the count and a photo of the crate. Any chick dead on arrival is replaced free in the next hatch, but the replacement depends on that count being clear. The full delivery detail sits on our delivery page, and the delivery guide explains the practical steps for receiving an order.

Vaccination and the batch record for urban flocks

The hatchery vaccinates every chick against Marek's disease, Newcastle disease, Gumboro (IBD), infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis. A batch record comes with the order. For an urban flock this record matters even more, because neighbours and visitors come close to the birds, and a clean health history gives you a calm answer when someone asks what you keep.

Keep the batch record with your household papers. If you later need to explain your flock to a vet, a landlord or a local official, the record shows what was done at the start. Your own follow-up vaccination timing is a separate job, and the vaccination schedule calculator can help you lay out the dates.

Keeping the peace with neighbours in a dense area

In a crowded township, a neighbour's view of your birds can make or break the project. Birds that are kept clean, fed on time and moved away from doorways rarely cause complaints. Birds left in a damp, untidy corner attract flies and smell, and that is where trouble starts. Clean out the litter regularly, dispose of waste away from the house, and keep feed in a sealed container so rats and pests stay away.

Check with your landlord and your local assembly on what you are allowed to keep on your plot before you order. Rules differ from one compound to the next, and it is far easier to sort that out before the chicks arrive than after. A small, tidy flock that everyone knows about is much easier to keep than a large one that nobody was told about.

Feed and water in the first weeks

Halaal Farms does not sell feed or equipment, so you will need a plan for where you buy them. Find a reliable feed seller before your chicks arrive, not after. Ask the seller for a starter feed for the first weeks and a grower feed afterwards, and check the bag date when you buy. Stale feed loses nutrients and can make birds sluggish.

Water matters as much as feed. Keep fresh, clean water available at all times, and clean the drinkers every day. The poultry feed calculator gives you a rough estimate of how much feed a flock of your size will use, so you can buy in sensible quantities rather than running out in the middle of a week.

Timing your order around the rains

Greater Accra has a long rainy season and a shorter one, and the wet months change how a yard behaves. Damp litter, standing water and cool nights all make a brooder harder to keep steady. Many keepers find that a chick order is easier to manage when the brooder is set up during a drier stretch, but the rains are not a reason to stop. They are a reason to plan the heat and the drainage before the chicks arrive.

Look at the weather for the week you expect delivery. If heavy rain is forecast, ask us whether a date a few days later suits your plan better, and make sure the brooder roof does not leak. A dry corner with good airflow and a lamp that holds its heat through a cool night makes a much bigger difference than the exact month you order in. For a wider look at how the seasons affect a keeper's plan, the guide to starting poultry farming in Ghana covers the planning steps.

Planning your first batch from Ashaiman

A first batch is a learning batch, even for a keeper who has kept birds before. Start with the box of 50 you can manage well, watch the birds closely, and write down what happens each week. That record is worth more than any advice you read online, because it reflects your own yard, your own feed and your own weather.

When you are ready for more, the poultry calculators hub brings the planning tools together in one place. The Madina page, the Tema page and the Accra page cover neighbouring areas if you want to compare how supply works across the city.

    Questions farmers ask

How much are day-old chicks in Ashaiman?

The starting price is GH₵ 20 per Ross 308 chick and GH₵ 23 per Hy-Line Brown chick. A box of 50 costs GH₵ 1,000 for Ross 308 and GH₵ 1,150 for Hy-Line Brown. Your final figure is the one in your written quote.

Do you deliver day-old chicks to Ashaiman?

Yes. We deliver to all 16 regions, and Ashaiman is included. The delivery cost is quoted in writing before you pay, so you know what it adds to the order.

What is the minimum order for an Ashaiman buyer?

The smallest order we take for any breed is one box of 50. A small keeper and a larger buyer both start there, and a bigger order simply means more boxes.

Can I visit the hatchery in Kasoa before I buy?

Farm visits are by appointment. Message us on WhatsApp or call to book a time, and we will tell you what to expect when you arrive at the Opeikuma hatchery.

Should I choose Ross 308 or Hy-Line Brown for a small yard?

Choose Ross 308 if your goal is meat and you have a sale date in mind. Choose Hy-Line Brown if your goal is eggs and you have a buyer for them. Both suit a modest yard when they are managed well.

What happens if chicks die on arrival?

Any chick dead on arrival is replaced free in the next hatch. Count the birds at the drop-off point with the driver present, and message us the same day with the count and a photo of the crate.

    Is vaccination included?

Yes. Every chick is vaccinated at the hatchery against Marek's, Newcastle, Gumboro, infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis, and a batch record comes with the order. Keep it with your records.

Do you sell feed for these chicks?

No. Halaal Farms sells chicks only and does not sell feed or equipment. Arrange a starter feed with a local seller before the chicks arrive, so the first days go smoothly.
