Short answer: At Halaal Farms in October 2026, day-old broiler chicks such as Ross 308 and Cobb 500 start from GH₵ 20 each, so a box of 50 starts from GH₵ 1,000. Imported layers start at GH₵ 23 to 25.50, Sasso at GH₵ 13, Kuroiler and Noiler at GH₵ 11 and white cockerels at GH₵ 3. Every price is confirmed in writing at order, before any money moves.

Key takeaways

  • Broiler chicks (Ross 308, Cobb 500) start from GH₵ 20 each; a box of 50 starts from GH₵ 1,000.
  • The lowest price per chick is not always the lowest cost per bird. Compare the price against the chicks you expect to keep alive.
  • Layer chicks cost more because the hatch is sexed and only pullets are sold, and imported stock carries paperwork and freight.
  • Imported chicks need three to four weeks' notice, and festive hatch slots fill first.
  • Before you pay, get the price, the delivery cost, the vaccination record and the dead-on-arrival rule in writing.

What the price includes at Halaal Farms

A chick price only means something when you know what comes with it. At our hatchery in Opeikuma, Kasoa, every chick is vaccinated before it leaves the farm against Marek's disease, Newcastle disease (NCD), Gumboro (IBD), infectious bronchitis and coccidiosis. You receive a batch record, so your vet can plan the booster visits from a written schedule instead of memory.

Chicks are dispatched on the day they hatch, packed in ventilated boxes of 50. They travel by trusted transport to the station in your town, or you can collect them from the farm. The delivery cost to your town is confirmed with you before you pay.

If a chick is dead on arrival, we replace it free in the next hatch. The rule is simple: count the chicks when the box reaches you, and send us a photo on WhatsApp the same day. Free advice comes before and after delivery, so the first week is not something you face alone. Payment is by mobile money, bank transfer or cash. We do not take payment online.

Why layer chicks cost more than broiler chicks

Layer chicks are the question we are asked most about price, so here is the reason. A layer hatch has to separate males from females. Males do not lay, so the cost of the whole hatch is carried by the pullets that are sold. The parent flocks behind commercial layer lines are also kept for a long, steady laying life, and that costs more to maintain than a broiler line.

Imported layers such as Hy-Line Brown, Hy-Line White and Bovans Brown come from hatcheries in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. They travel with a veterinary health certificate and clear customs at Accra (Kotoka) under a Ghana import permit from the Veterinary Services Directorate. That paperwork and the freight are part of what you pay for, and it is why we ask you to book imported chicks three to four weeks ahead.

Local hatches use European parent stock as well. Eggs spend 18 days in the setter at 37.5 °C, then move to the hatcher, and the chicks are ready by day 21. If you are deciding between the two routes, our guide on imported versus local day-old chicks sets out the trade-offs.

Cockerels, Sasso and other dual-purpose birds

At the other end of the list, white cockerels are the male chicks from layer hatches. They were never bred for fast meat, so they grow slowly. What they offer is hardiness and a ready market: live cockerels sell well at Christmas, Easter and Eid. A box of 50 at about GH₵ 150 is one of the lowest-risk ways we know for a farmer to test the market.

Dual-purpose breeds sit in between. Sasso at GH₵ 13, Kuroiler and Noiler at GH₵ 11 each, and Plymouth Rock at GH₵ 7 are kept for both eggs and meat. They reach market weight later than a broiler, so you wait longer for the money. A simple way to choose:

  • Fastest money: broiler (Ross 308 or Cobb 500), harvested in about five to six weeks.
  • Middle road: Sasso, Kuroiler or Noiler, slower to market but with eggs and meat from the same flock.
  • Lowest cash outlay: white cockerels or Plymouth Rock, cheap to buy and slower to sell.

Choose the breed for your buyers before you choose by price. Our breed comparison walks through the decision in more detail, and our breeds page lists what each bird is for.

Four things that move chick prices in Ghana

Chick prices in Ghana move for four main reasons. None of them is a secret, but knowing which one is working against you helps you plan the batch.

1. Feed

Breeder flocks eat maize and soya like every other farm. When feed prices rise, the cost of producing a fertile egg rises, and chick prices follow a few weeks later. If you are budgeting a full cycle, treat feed as the biggest cost and do not assume today's chick price will hold for a hatch you book two months from now.

2. Imports and the cedi

Imported chicks are paid for in foreign currency, and so is much of the parent stock behind local hatches. A weaker cedi pushes the price of imported chicks up quickly. This is why a price you were quoted a month ago should be checked again before you pay.

3. Season

Demand for broiler chicks peaks from late October to mid-November for Christmas, and again before Easter and Eid. Hatch slots in those weeks fill first. Booking three to four weeks early is the simplest way to get the date you need at the price you were quoted.

4. Order size

The minimum order is one box of 50, or a box of 10 for turkey poults. Larger orders are planned into a single hatch, so a farmer buying 1,000 chicks or more gets a quote made for that order. Orders of 1,000 and above are quoted individually, and the details are on our bulk day-old chicks page.

A worked example: budgeting a first box

Here is how to work out what a first box really costs. The numbers in this section are examples to show the method. They are not quotes, and they are not a claim about any hatchery.

Step 1: the box price. One box of 50 Ross 308 chicks at GH₵ 20 each costs GH₵ 1,000 (50 × 20). A box of 50 Sasso at GH₵ 13 costs GH₵ 650. The GH₵ 350 gap looks like a saving, but only if Sasso birds are what your buyers want and you can wait longer for them to reach market weight.

Step 2: the cost per live chick. The price on the invoice is not what a chick costs you. A chick that dies in the first week still used your brooder, your heat and your labour. Divide the box price by the number of chicks you expect to have alive on day seven.

Example casePrice per chickLost in week oneAlive on day sevenCost per live chick
Quoted broiler, low lossGH₵ 201 of 5049GH₵ 20.41
Cheaper chick, moderate lossGH₵ 156 of 5044GH₵ 17.05
Cheaper chick, heavy lossGH₵ 1514 of 5036GH₵ 20.83

The cheaper box only wins if it loses few chicks. In the third row, a GH₵ 15 chick ends up costing more per live bird than a GH₵ 20 chick with a low loss rate. Ask every supplier two questions: how many chicks will I have on day seven, and what happens to the ones that die? Then do the division.

Step 3: the rest of the batch budget. The chick is only one line. Feed, vaccines, litter, water, heat and fuel are usually larger costs over the cycle. Ask your feed supplier for this month's price per bag and build the budget from that figure, not from ours.

When to buy to keep your price and your date

Timing matters as much as price. Keep these patterns in mind when you plan a batch:

  • Late October to mid-November: Christmas broiler demand peaks, so the hatch slots for this period go first.
  • Before Easter and Eid: book three to four weeks ahead, since the same buyers look for birds at these festivals.
  • Any month, imported stock: three to four weeks' notice, because the chicks are sourced and cleared before they reach you.

Today is 18 October. If you want chicks placed in early November for Christmas, you need to book this week. The full week-by-week calendar is in our Christmas broiler timing guide.

Common mistakes when comparing chick prices

  • Comparing the box price without the loss rate. A cheap box that loses a quarter of its chicks is not cheap.
  • Buying without the paperwork. Ask for the price, the vaccination record and the dead-on-arrival rule in writing before you pay.
  • Booking late in a festive month. By the last week of October the peak slots are often gone.
  • Forgetting the road. Day-old chicks can travel up to about 48 hours on the yolk they absorbed before hatching, but they do best when the brooder is ready and they reach it quickly.
  • No brooder ready on arrival. Heat, water and feed must be in place before the box arrives. Our brooder setup guide has the list.
  • Choosing a breed your buyers do not want. A cheaper bird that sits unsold costs more than the difference in the chick price.

Regional notes: arrival planning across Ghana

We deliver to all 16 regions of Ghana. The journey mostly changes your arrival-day plan, and the delivery cost to your town is confirmed before you pay. From Kasoa, Greater Accra is 30 to 60 km away, or 1 to 2 hours by road. Kumasi in the Ashanti Region is about 240 km, or 4 to 5 hours. Tamale in the Northern Region is about 620 km, or 10 to 12 hours. A longer trip means you should check the brooder twice as carefully on arrival.

Whatever your region, the delivery page explains how the chicks travel and how collection works.

Checklist before you pay for chicks

Before any money moves, go through this list. It takes five minutes and prevents most of the problems we see.

  1. Breed and number: confirm the breed, the number of boxes and the date you want the chicks.
  2. Price in writing: the chick price and the delivery cost to your town.
  3. Vaccination record: confirm you will receive the batch record for your vet.
  4. Dead-on-arrival rule: count on arrival and send the photo the same day.
  5. Collection point: the station in your town, or collection from the farm.
  6. Brooder ready: heat, water, feed and clean litter in place before the box arrives.

Questions farmers ask

How much are day-old chicks in Ghana in October 2026?

At Halaal Farms in October 2026, broiler chicks (Ross 308 and Cobb 500) start from GH₵ 20 each. Sasso starts from GH₵ 13, Kuroiler and Noiler from GH₵ 11, Plymouth Rock from GH₵ 7 and white cockerels from GH₵ 3. Hy-Line Brown starts from GH₵ 23, and Hy-Line White and Bovans Brown from GH₵ 25.50. These are starting prices, confirmed in writing at order.

How much is a box of broiler day-old chicks in Ghana?

A box of 50 Ross 308 or Cobb 500 chicks starts at GH₵ 1,000 at Halaal Farms, and that box is also our minimum order. Chicks are dispatched on the day they hatch in ventilated boxes. Delivery to your town is a separate cost that we confirm before you pay, so ask for the full figure in writing before you transfer any money.

What is the cheapest day-old chick on your list?

White cockerels are the lowest-priced chick we sell, from about GH₵ 3 each, or GH₵ 150 for a box of 50. They grow slowly but are hardy and sell well live at Christmas, Easter and Eid. The lowest price is not always the lowest cost per bird, so compare price against survival and market weight.

Why are layer chicks more expensive than broiler chicks?

A layer hatch separates males from females, and only the pullets are sold, so the whole hatch is paid for by the females. Layer parent flocks are also kept for a long laying life. Imported layers add health certificates, import permits and freight to the cost.

Are chick prices fixed for the whole year?

No. Prices move with feed costs, with the cedi for imported stock, and with demand in festive seasons. The prices on our list are starting points updated on 18 October 2026. We confirm the exact price when you order, and always in writing before payment.

What happens if day-old chicks die on arrival?

They are replaced free in the next hatch. Count the chicks as soon as the box reaches you, and send a photo on WhatsApp to +233 24 915 1503 the same day. Free advice is available before and after delivery as well.

How far ahead should I book day-old chicks?

For imported chicks, book three to four weeks ahead. For the Christmas, Easter and Eid peaks, book earlier, because festive hatch slots fill first. If you are planning a November placement, book during October.
